Is There a Tiger in the Woods?

Friday, April 30th, 2010

With Tiger Woods set to tee off for the first time since the serial adultery allegations, at the US Masters which is the first major competition of the year, has it give any of us the golf bug and the urge to travel or take a holiday and include some golf?

Do we actually have to travel faraway to experience the wonderful striking fairways of the official top golf courses in the world? Can we not entice ourselves with what we and Europe have?
Questionably, in some people’s opinions, the greatest courses are closer to home and have some of the top reviews by amateur and professional players.

Tee off this summer to some of the most eye-catching golf courses that are closer to home with tremendous surroundings, history and forestry.

For instance, the top golf course in the whole of Europe is quite possibly Valderrama Golf Club situated in the Costa del Sol in the south of Spain. As cheap Costa del Sol holidays are readily available from the major UK tour operators as well as the low cost airlines flying into Malaga, so it would seem a total shame if we missed out on this one.

It is frequently compared to Augusta in Georgia in the USA and is said by countless people to be the Augusta of Europe. With the course hosting the Ryder Cup in 1997 and a number of the World Championships in recent years, it is rated number one in all of Europe.

This course is certainly one to try if you are a keen golfer. It has an eighteen hole course with many memorable and challenging holes to experience and conquer, as Tiger Woods memorably was challenged here in 1999 and 2000. It is a tricky course to play and tactical play is important.

The one to watch on this course is definitely hole four, ‘La Cascada’. This hole presents a water hazard stuck between two bunkers and has a par five. It often challenges many professional golfers but demands and receives the respect it deserves.

The course has been renovated and titivated for more than twenty years and now offers an extremely high standard of golf course presenting ideal and perfect, gentle rolling terrain, cork tree forests and stunning Mediterranean views.

The climate in this area of the world is perfect all through the year so it is a perfect all year round golf course and many top players including Tiger Woods have said this to be a thrilling and breath-taking course to play.

Valderrama Golf Club is a private club, however, visitors are welcomed to play here and they have nine slots daily to tee off between midday and 2pm. This can, expectedly, get full really quickly so booking at least three months in advance is definitely advisable and also checking the course fees are also recommended prior to booking.

So whether you are staying in the UK this year for your holiday, trying to find cheap Costa del Sol holidays to visit this magnificent course or even travelling somewhere else in Europe to visit one of the many golf courses available to us then just remember you don’t have to go too far away to experience a top class course.

Take to the Greens on a Golfing Holiday in the Algarve

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Keen golfers looking for their next putting adventure should consider booking villa holidays in Portugal if they want to enjoy the sport in beautiful, sun-drenched surroundings.

And the Algarve region in southern Portugal is the perfect place to visit if you want a wide choice of courses.

There are more than 30 dotted along this stretch of the country’s coastline, with something for everyone no matter what their golfing ability.

If you are looking for the greatest number of different golf courses to try out, then seeking out villa rentals in the central Algarve is your best bet.

But if you are after a bit of history to mix in with your exploits on the golf course then heading to the west of the Algarve is the way to go.

This corner of Portugal is home to the region’s first golfing green at the Penina golf course. Henry Cotton designed and built this haven for golfers back in the 1960s, which was the first grass course in the Algarve.

He went on to design two further golf courses, but the 18-hole Penina range is a must-visit for serious golfing fans.

Although the green is generally flat, Cotton included a number of water hazards to up the difficulty level on what is described as a “challenging” course.

But if you’ve only just managed to identify your putter from your driver then there are still plenty of places you can go to perfect your stroke.

Courses such as Balaia in central Algarve are ideal if you are just starting out. Featuring just nine holes it is a great place for beginners to get to grips with their game, while experienced golfers will still find the course challenging enough to be enjoyable.

Another attraction of Balaia for anyone staying in villas in Portugal are the views afforded by some of its greens, which look out over the clear blue seas of the Algarve.

While golfing is all well and good, you will no doubt want to tear yourself away from the greens for at least one day to explore just some of the sights that this region of Portugal has to offer.

Historic towns can be found all along the coastline, boasting medieval castles and picturesque cathedrals and churches that you can explore at your leisure.

Alternatively, you might want to keep active and if so, trying out some water sports in the area could be a good option.

From surfing to waterskiing, you will find it all on the beaches of the Algarve.

If the idea of waterskiing takes your fancy then head to Vilamoura or Quinta do Lago, while if surfing is more appealing then a visit to the beaches at Lagos may be a better choice.

If you are searching for villa holidays and villa rentals for your next holiday why not consider a holiday to France. Visit Igluvillas.com where you can find a fantastic range of villas in Portugal to choose from.

Where to Play Golf in Brazil

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Not many people are aware of the fact that Brazil is slowly but surely becoming quite a popular golf destination. Many people that plan on visiting this country will spend a couple of hours at a golf course having fun and relaxing. The question is where golf players can make the most of their time? With the help of this article you will be able to know which places to visit in order to enjoy a beautiful afternoon at a golf course.

First of all, Salvador Da Bahia is dedicated to this sport. By dedicated we mean that they have actually created a Department of Golf within its tourism department. One of the most important golf courses in all Brazil is Costa do Sauipe Golf Links which is in Sao Joao. It was designed by Brian Costello and takes advantage of its gorgeous location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Another interesting option is Costa do Sauipe which is the championship course which hosted the Brazilian Open back in 2005. The course is known for being kept in a perfect condition and it has a golden reputation across the country. It features all the needed, like carts, driving range as well as a clubhouse with all of the amenities needed for the golf players. An avid golfer by the name of Alexandre Rui Chammas, a resident of Sao Paolo, stated that this golf course is in fact one of the best courses in all Brazil.

An alternative would be Comandatuba which is a privately owned course belonging to Transamerica Hotel that in fact dominates the entire island. The course itself is not only a golf experience per say but also an ecological excursion because by going here you will notice a wide variety of birds, anteaters, foxes and even monkeys. The golf course was designed by the famous American golf course designer Dan Blankenship. Although the setting is quite exotic, the golf conditions are just perfect. An 18-hole championship course that plays at nearly 7,000 yards from the tips, Comandatuba will challenge you with a respectable 72.9 rating.

In the Rio de Janeiro region, there are a couple of golf courses in Buzios, and in the opposite direction – in Angora dos Reis, where there is a luxury resort that has a great field and it is connected to the local hotel. To the south, there are the Florianopolis greens. The location is known for being a great place for sea sports like swimming, surfing and diving, but of course, it has some great golf courses.

Yet another important travel attraction in the country where there is a golf course is Iguassu, located in the mid south, near the frontier with Argentina and Paraguay. Iguassu boasts the world’s biggest waterfalls, a natural phenomenon far beyond Niagara Falls. The local Bourbon Iguassu Golf Resort hotel has excellent greens.

There is a recent development in golf courses in Bahia, a situation which will most likely be found in other locations across the country thanks to the media which encourages people of all ages to start enjoying this hobby which in the past was only for the upper class.

Brazil – A Golf Paradise in the Making

Friday, April 30th, 2010

We all know that the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will host the 2016 Olympics which is a great upcoming event for football players that like this sport. Ronaldo and Pele are idols to many Brazilians but who knows, Tiger Woods might become one of their heroes too. Although not many people know this, golf is in fact one of the fastest growing sports in a country where people talk mainly about football/soccer. The tendency in golf is that people of all ages now start practicing this, in comparison to a few decades ago when golf was considered to be played only by the elite of the country.

The president of the Brazilian Golf Confederation, Alvaro Almeida, recently stated that this sport in Brazil is developing at a very fast rate and the situation is just amazing. He also said that this situation is a direct consequence to the many efforts the confederation made in order to bring golf not only to those who have a lot of money but to all people belonging to various social classes that are looking for an affordable way to relax (except football/soccer of course).

This growth of popularity golf has been benefiting from started 5 years ago, but in comparison to Europe or United States of America, there is still a lot of catching up to do. Back in 2000, only 6,000 people played golf on a regular basis and in 2010, this number has grown tremendously to 25,000. Brazil has now 30% more golf courses, 40% more driving ranges and three times the number of golf stores in comparison to the situation found five years ago. Even more, about 40 projects for new golf courses are under development across the entire country, one of them is financed by Donald Trump himself, and designed by the famous Jack Nickalus.

The media eyes have turned their attention to this brand new hobby that Brazilians have, and the Golf Digest is now published in Brazil’s language which is of course, Portuguese. Even more than that, some of the newspapers in the country have added golf columns. Also, for the very first time in Brazil, a local cable channel is broadcasting the world-wide known PGA Tour. Some of the officials estimate that the golf business is worth about $150 million dollars.

Homero Setti, a golf store owner in a Sao Paolo shopping mall stated that Brazilians are beginning to show their interest in this sport, more want to know about it and how it is played. Even famous people like Kaka, Ronaldo, Rubens Barrichello (Formula One driver) and the three times French Open winner, Gustavo Kuerten. Almeida stated that this ever increasing popularity of golf is also influenced by the fact that many important people, like the ones listed above, started practicing this hobby and when people see that their idols are practicing golf; they easily start to get interested in golf.

All things considered, Brazil has a lot to offer to golf enthusiasts with lots of golf courses, shops and the entire base needed for this relaxing sport that keeps getting popular and popular in this country where soccer is still considered number one.
