Email marketing is the key to internet marketers bringing home the bacon. Even if you are an AdWords genius, and can bring in hundreds of leads a day, if you can’t hold on to them with your follow-up email campaigns and your broadcasts, you are dead in the water. The competition is fierce, and your emails must stand out above the rest that people are bombarded with every day. Does yours suck?
(I must mention that I am talking about opt-in lists that you build YOURSELF. I am NOT talking about lists that you buy, borrow or rent. I am NOT talking about SPAMMING emails out to people that did not ASK to be put on your list. I do not agree with, or condone this kind of email marketing, and I will assume, for the sake of this article, that you don’t either.)
Obviously, the first ingredient to a good email campaign is GETTING PEOPLE TO OPEN THEM. Your subject line MUST grab their attention. Be creative and create an irresistible urge for people to see what you have to say. And, by the way, “The Secret to Overnight Millions” is not what I am talking about. High-dollar, outrageous claims is over-used and not effective anymore. Use their name quite often, and use the word “you.” Make the subject personal, maybe painting an introduction to a story, or asking an interactive question.
Bad example: “Webinar announcement”
Good example: “You won’t believe I did this, (name)! Plus, webinar invite..”
Now, moving on. I believe that a good email marketing campaign is like special effects in a movie. You don’t notice unless they’re BAD. Let’s talk about what bad email campaigns look like.
A bad email campaign, first off, is one that is not proof-read. Misspelled words, grammar mistakes, punctuation errors, etc., are big no-no’s. You cannot exude professionalism if you make these kinds of mistakes. So, proofread. (One typo every once in a while is not a big deal, but consistent mistakes throughout your emails is completely unacceptable.)
The way your text is laid out MATTERS. Wide indexed text, that goes all the way across the page, does NOT hold people’s attention. Short indexed text, with just a few words per line, keeps people a lot longer. Also, just a few lines per paragraph. Do not run all your text together with no break for your prospect’s eyes. That will overwhelm them, and you will lose them.
A huge characteristic of a bad email campaign is being pushy with your prospects. High-pressure is a turn-off, and your emails will not be respected, or opened again.
Do not repeat the same email too many times. Sending out the same email three times in one day is just plain obnoxious. Even in the same week. If you had an email that you sent out a few months back, that had a good response, then sending that one again is ok, but keep the repeats to a minimum. Letting your list know about a webinar early in the week, then sending a reminder on the day of the webinar is totally ok.
Aside from repeats, even if you are sending out too many DIFFERENT emails in a single day, people will get tired of seeing your name in their inbox, and they will start to ignore you. Even if your content is good and informative, you will be sucking too much of people’s time. (In other words, your email campaign “sucks.”) If you have THAT many things to tell people, write an ebook.
Here is a good example of how many emails to send: A follow-up campaign should email people one email every day for about two weeks. Then, you can spread out the interval to every other day for a week or two, then spread it out a couple of more days. (DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE people that are on your list for a long time. They just might not be ready to buy yet. Plus, you should be marketing smaller products along the way, so you should be profiting from those that are not even joining or buying your main product or opportunity.) With your broadcasts, it’s ok to send out maybe one a day, or every other day. Use your better judgement, but I would not send more than that. That means, at the most, some prospects might get two different emails from you in one day. NO MORE!
Long and boring emails do not cut it. Going on for ten paragraphs about the economic structure of china in relation to your business opportunity, will bore people to death, and you will be cut off from their inbox forever. The content must be short and spicy, informative, and relevant to what they opted-in for. Give them value! Add personality, and be funny. Tell stories. Your emails need to be “moving.” By that, I mean they need to have action in them.
Ex: Hey, (name), I was just heading
out to the golf course with a buddy,
but I wanted to throw this out at
you real quick…… etc, etc.
Don’t lie in your email, but do you see the ACTION and MOVEMENT of this engaging email introduction? Engage the reader, give them content that is helpful, and let them go. We live in an A.D.D culture, which needs movement, so if you make them stay in one spot, or on one subject too long, they’ll be on to the next one. You can “discuss” topics sometimes, but, if you do, make sure you keep them engaged.
Have links in your emails. Links to the latest video you did on PPC, (Video is a HUGE YES!) or a link to a “must-have” book that you recommend. Strategically talk about your affiliate products in some of your emails, and give the link. BUT DO NOT BOMBARD PEOPLE WITH AFFILIATE STUFF! They will get sick of your pitching. Always, ALWAYS have the link to your website in your signature. You must remind them to go back to your website. Link them to everything else you do in your business. Did you write an ezine article? Talk it up and send them to it. Did you write a new blog post? Send ‘em. Did you do an interview with a new team mate? Give it to them. You get the point.
Your email campaigns must call people to action. If you do not tell people what to do, they just won’t do it. It’s not that we are a society of monkeys, but, you are more likely to get a response if you tell them to do something, like click the link, or CALL YOU! Always give your phone number and prompt them to call you. Personal relationship is important, so make yourself available.
Have your autoresponder follow-ups be timeless. Use current events for your broadcasts. Don’t have a link to a two-year old, antiquated ebook in your follow-up, or an old announcement. The prospects on your list will always be on different cycles, so your #2 follow-up email might have been relevant a year ago, but is not relevant to someone who opted-in yesterday. Use your broadcasts for the current stuff. Do maintenance on your campaign. Keep your eye on it.
Funny (and embarrassing) personal story of mine: I had a link to a YouTube video of mine, in my first follow-up email. YouTube got more strict on their copyright rules, so some music I had in my video was unacceptable to them. They completely took out the audio of my video, unbeknownst to me, for I don’t know how long, so every new opt-in of mine was getting a link to a video with no sound. It completely killed the effectiveness of my video, and I didn’t even know about it! I was so embarrassed when I discovered it, as I’m sure my prospects were completely turned off by that. YOU HAVE TO STAY ON TOP OF YOUR CAMPAIGN!
Your unsubscribe links should not just be for unsubscribing. Make sure the system or company you use has other options as well. If a woman gets married, she should have the option to go in and change her name, etc. Make sure the program you use protects you and watches out for you regarding the spam laws, also. Make sure they have a good relationship with the web service providers like Google, AOL, etc.
Well, here, I have touched on a few ways to keep your email marketing campaigns from sucking. So, I want to challenge you with this question. Does YOUR email marketing campaign suck? Go, and make sure it doesn’t…
