Does Your Email Marketing Campaign Suck? Find Out How to Avoid Dead-End Follow-Up

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Email marketing is the key to internet marketers bringing home the bacon. Even if you are an AdWords genius, and can bring in hundreds of leads a day, if you can’t hold on to them with your follow-up email campaigns and your broadcasts, you are dead in the water. The competition is fierce, and your emails must stand out above the rest that people are bombarded with every day. Does yours suck?

(I must mention that I am talking about opt-in lists that you build YOURSELF. I am NOT talking about lists that you buy, borrow or rent. I am NOT talking about SPAMMING emails out to people that did not ASK to be put on your list. I do not agree with, or condone this kind of email marketing, and I will assume, for the sake of this article, that you don’t either.)

Obviously, the first ingredient to a good email campaign is GETTING PEOPLE TO OPEN THEM. Your subject line MUST grab their attention. Be creative and create an irresistible urge for people to see what you have to say. And, by the way, “The Secret to Overnight Millions” is not what I am talking about. High-dollar, outrageous claims is over-used and not effective anymore. Use their name quite often, and use the word “you.” Make the subject personal, maybe painting an introduction to a story, or asking an interactive question.

Bad example: “Webinar announcement”
Good example: “You won’t believe I did this, (name)! Plus, webinar invite..”

Now, moving on. I believe that a good email marketing campaign is like special effects in a movie. You don’t notice unless they’re BAD. Let’s talk about what bad email campaigns look like.

A bad email campaign, first off, is one that is not proof-read. Misspelled words, grammar mistakes, punctuation errors, etc., are big no-no’s. You cannot exude professionalism if you make these kinds of mistakes. So, proofread. (One typo every once in a while is not a big deal, but consistent mistakes throughout your emails is completely unacceptable.)

The way your text is laid out MATTERS. Wide indexed text, that goes all the way across the page, does NOT hold people’s attention. Short indexed text, with just a few words per line, keeps people a lot longer. Also, just a few lines per paragraph. Do not run all your text together with no break for your prospect’s eyes. That will overwhelm them, and you will lose them.

A huge characteristic of a bad email campaign is being pushy with your prospects. High-pressure is a turn-off, and your emails will not be respected, or opened again.

Do not repeat the same email too many times. Sending out the same email three times in one day is just plain obnoxious. Even in the same week. If you had an email that you sent out a few months back, that had a good response, then sending that one again is ok, but keep the repeats to a minimum. Letting your list know about a webinar early in the week, then sending a reminder on the day of the webinar is totally ok.

Aside from repeats, even if you are sending out too many DIFFERENT emails in a single day, people will get tired of seeing your name in their inbox, and they will start to ignore you. Even if your content is good and informative, you will be sucking too much of people’s time. (In other words, your email campaign “sucks.”) If you have THAT many things to tell people, write an ebook.

Here is a good example of how many emails to send: A follow-up campaign should email people one email every day for about two weeks. Then, you can spread out the interval to every other day for a week or two, then spread it out a couple of more days. (DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE people that are on your list for a long time. They just might not be ready to buy yet. Plus, you should be marketing smaller products along the way, so you should be profiting from those that are not even joining or buying your main product or opportunity.) With your broadcasts, it’s ok to send out maybe one a day, or every other day. Use your better judgement, but I would not send more than that. That means, at the most, some prospects might get two different emails from you in one day. NO MORE!

Long and boring emails do not cut it. Going on for ten paragraphs about the economic structure of china in relation to your business opportunity, will bore people to death, and you will be cut off from their inbox forever. The content must be short and spicy, informative, and relevant to what they opted-in for. Give them value! Add personality, and be funny. Tell stories. Your emails need to be “moving.” By that, I mean they need to have action in them.

Ex: Hey, (name), I was just heading

out to the golf course with a buddy,

but I wanted to throw this out at

you real quick…… etc, etc.

Don’t lie in your email, but do you see the ACTION and MOVEMENT of this engaging email introduction? Engage the reader, give them content that is helpful, and let them go. We live in an A.D.D culture, which needs movement, so if you make them stay in one spot, or on one subject too long, they’ll be on to the next one. You can “discuss” topics sometimes, but, if you do, make sure you keep them engaged.

Have links in your emails. Links to the latest video you did on PPC, (Video is a HUGE YES!) or a link to a “must-have” book that you recommend. Strategically talk about your affiliate products in some of your emails, and give the link. BUT DO NOT BOMBARD PEOPLE WITH AFFILIATE STUFF! They will get sick of your pitching. Always, ALWAYS have the link to your website in your signature. You must remind them to go back to your website. Link them to everything else you do in your business. Did you write an ezine article? Talk it up and send them to it. Did you write a new blog post? Send ‘em. Did you do an interview with a new team mate? Give it to them. You get the point.

Your email campaigns must call people to action. If you do not tell people what to do, they just won’t do it. It’s not that we are a society of monkeys, but, you are more likely to get a response if you tell them to do something, like click the link, or CALL YOU! Always give your phone number and prompt them to call you. Personal relationship is important, so make yourself available.

Have your autoresponder follow-ups be timeless. Use current events for your broadcasts. Don’t have a link to a two-year old, antiquated ebook in your follow-up, or an old announcement. The prospects on your list will always be on different cycles, so your #2 follow-up email might have been relevant a year ago, but is not relevant to someone who opted-in yesterday. Use your broadcasts for the current stuff. Do maintenance on your campaign. Keep your eye on it.

Funny (and embarrassing) personal story of mine: I had a link to a YouTube video of mine, in my first follow-up email. YouTube got more strict on their copyright rules, so some music I had in my video was unacceptable to them. They completely took out the audio of my video, unbeknownst to me, for I don’t know how long, so every new opt-in of mine was getting a link to a video with no sound. It completely killed the effectiveness of my video, and I didn’t even know about it! I was so embarrassed when I discovered it, as I’m sure my prospects were completely turned off by that. YOU HAVE TO STAY ON TOP OF YOUR CAMPAIGN!

Your unsubscribe links should not just be for unsubscribing. Make sure the system or company you use has other options as well. If a woman gets married, she should have the option to go in and change her name, etc. Make sure the program you use protects you and watches out for you regarding the spam laws, also. Make sure they have a good relationship with the web service providers like Google, AOL, etc.

Well, here, I have touched on a few ways to keep your email marketing campaigns from sucking. So, I want to challenge you with this question. Does YOUR email marketing campaign suck? Go, and make sure it doesn’t…

Email Marketing – How it Works in 4 Simple Steps

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

I hope by now you’re persuaded that email marketing is a tool that you absolutely want to add to your marketing mix. When done correctly it will become your goose that lays the golden egg and you’ll be able to generate business at the push of a button. If you do it incorrectly however, you’ll very likely end up killing the goose and be thrown in spammers prison. You don’t want to go there.

So, how does email marketing work and how can you make it work for you? The reality is, you can use email marketing to accomplish lots of different things. You can use it to:

  • Sell a product or service
  • Generate leads
  • Brand yourself as the expert in your field
  • Build celebrity status for yourself
  • Inform, educate and inspire the people on your list

Email marketing can do all of these things and more. You can even build multiple lists with different goals and target different audiences with different needs. The most important thing is to determine what you want to accomplish before you begin.

Here’s a simple example of how email marketing works. Let’s assume that you’re a professional landscape architect and you want to use email to sell your services to people who want a palatial backyard. Up until now, you’ve been sending emails to your prospects from your computer. Problem is, it’s not only time consuming but it’s not giving you the results you want.

After talking to a friend, you decide to give email marketing a try.

Step 1: Software or Service

The very first thing you need to do is to decide if you want to purchase email marketing software and run it from your server, or outsource it to an email marketing service company that can maintain your list for you. There are pros and cons to both, but for this example let’s assume that you decide to outsource this service. This is what 95% of the professional Internet marketers do.

Step 2: Gather Contact Information

The next thing you’ll need to do is gather the contact information of the people you want on your email list. If you have a website or blog, you can create a “Sign-up” box and encourage visitors to give you their name and email address there. If you don’t have a website, you can acquire this information by asking every potential customer you meet to give you their name and email address and manually add that information to your software program.

Step 3: Write An Auto-Responder Series

Most email marketing programs allow you to send an email message to your list using either a newsletter feature or an auto-responder feature. Let’s start with the auto-responder. Here’s how it works.

You write a series of emails that the people on your list will find interesting and helpful. Since you’re a landscape architect, your messages might look like this.

  1. How to convert your backyard into a zoo for children.
  2. Five trees that will shade your house in the summer and sun it the winter.
  3. Three cool backyard projects you can complete in a weekend.
  4. How to build a water feature for under $300.
  5. How to create a backyard scent for all seasons using herbs.
And so on and so forth.

You want to make sure that you let your prospects know that you’re available do these things if they don’t have the time or energy to do it themselves. And you can also direct them to an affiliate website where they can purchase the tools necessary to complete each project without your help. Either way, you earn money.

After your messages are written, you set the auto-responder to schedule your first email to be sent within minutes of someone signing up on your list. Then you schedule each additional email to be delivered every three days or every week automatically until all of your messages have been delivered.

Studies show that it takes between 7 and 11 positive contacts before a prospect feels comfortable enough to buy from you. By the time they’ve received and read all of your automated emails, the people on your list are going to see you in a different light. They’re going to:

  • See you as an expert in your field.
  • See you as a celebrity.
  • Trust you.
  • Like you.
  • And most importantly, they’re going to think about you when they’re ready to landscape their backyard.

Step 4: Write and Send a Monthly or Quarterly Newsletter

You’ll also want to send a monthly or quarterly newsletter to your entire list so you can stay in touch with the people who have completed your auto-responder. The newsletter feature allows you to inform the people on your list about an up-coming event or tell them about a limited time offer or send them interesting industry news.

Think of it this way. The purpose of the auto-responder is to build your credibility, celebrity, trust and reputation as the expert in your field; and the purpose of the newsletter to stay in touch with your entire list so that you are front-of-mind when they’re ready to become a customer. This is how email marketing works.

Email Marketing – Advantages & Disadvantages of Email Marketing

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Email marketing is one of the most effective marketing channels to promote your product or service. Every day, companies use emails to do business. If you know how to plan a good email campaign, you will see the tremendous results from it. Although email marketing has a lot of advantages, it also has some disadvantages too.

One of the most important advantages of email marketing is that it allows you to reach global audience with minimum effort. There is no geographical boundary when it comes to email marketing. Although it is still possible to reach global audience with other offline advertising channels like radio, TV and other printed media, email marketing is definitely the cheapest.

It is extremely cheap to launch an email campaign when compared to other marketing channels. In most cases, you already have your own subscribers. So, you do not need to pay to get a mailing list. The cost to send emails is very low. Usually an email will cost less than a cent. As you can see, the cost is very minimal to launch an email marketing campaign.

However, there is also some cost involved in email marketing. For example, when you plan an email campaign, if you do not have in-house designers, you need to hire someone else to design a HTML email template for you. The cost of the template will depend on who you hire. Also, there is also a fee involved for copywriting the campaign too.

Now, let us move on to the disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage of email marketing is that your emails will sometimes be deemed as spam. Today, people are bombarded with lots of unsolicited emails. Email service providers have taken action to enforce more powerful spam filters. Although spam filters are good at blocking spam mails, sometimes they also block legitimate emails too. To prevent this from happening, the subject line and content of your emails should not imply that they are spam. Avoid using words like “Free”, “Discounts”, “Coupon”, etc.

When you are planning your email campaign, make sure that the content of the emails are planned carefully. Your emails should not always be pitching about your product or service. Provide other tips and information to your subscribers so that they will find it worthwhile to stay on your mailing list. When your subscribers trust you, they will be more receptive to your promotional emails. One thing that you must note is that every promotional email campaign should entice your subscribers to a call to action. There must be enticing call to action statements in your emails so that your subscribers are recommended to make a particular action such as purchasing a product.
