I wanted to look at a variety of mistakes that a lot of people make with designing websites, whether DIY builds or when instructing a designer. So here are my list of worst offending mistakes that often happen!

1. Don’t Check Browser Compatibility
There is a local web designer who obviously work in Internet Explorer. How can I tell? Well all his websites look fine in Internet Explorer, but some fail in Firefox. You must remember every time you build a website to check it in different browsers, different versions of those browsers (Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8 are all still supported), different operating systems and different sized screens. It is a pain, but they don’t all render CSS the same way.

2. Hide Important Details
If you want someone to buy from you, make sure that all of the required features are there. I’ve had several designs arrive from graphic designers who have forgotten to link to the shopping basket and recently I was trying to book a hotel, but the one we wanted didn’t say what times check-in and check-out were. So make sure all of the details to complete a transaction are present!

3. Play Some Music
Let’s face it, if someone wants to listen to music while they browse the internet, they will have it on in the background. But if they are browsing in the office or when everyone else is asleep, if your website has music playing in the background it is the quickest way possible to lose a visitor. It is great fun when someone opens a website with music in an office – everyone knows they aren’t working. Not good for completing the sale.

4. Design For Widescreen
If you have a 1600 pixel wide screen don’t fill it – not unless you are using floating widths! If a webpage needs to scroll horizontally on a standard screen you are going to lose visitors. If they also have to scroll in the traditional vertical direction, they will get lost. Design the page to fit the majority of screens – either make it narrow enough to do this or resize it for the screen width. But refer to point 1 – check the page on different screen sizes!

5. Plenty Of Movement
We are not at Hogwarts, so we don’t need everything we read to have moving pictures. Have a look at some of the most popular sites and movement is restricted to just the adverts. Why? Because it is a distraction! For adverts it gets attention, but use too much movement on a screen and the distraction will lose business.

6. Don’t Read Your Work
You’ve typed it up and published it, so why read it? The amount of sites that I see with spelling and grammatical errors is amazing. It doesn’t look good to your visitors if words are misspelt. It gives an air of a rushed job and they will loose faith in your business.

7. Have Different Styles On Every Page
A little branding to differentiate different categories and areas of the site is fine, but you shouldn’t have each page markedly different. Keep the navigation in the same areas of the page and keep the colour schemes consistent. If you do want to change something, add a logo or badge.

There are plenty more tricks that you can do to upset your readers, these are just some of the most common I have experienced in my Merseyside Website Design career. If you want to read more of my marketing and website help and advice, call into the marketing blog.

So, if you’ve been in the web design game for quite some time you already know the benefits of using Web design documents in your projects. However, if you are brand-new to the industry or are considering starting up a freelance business, then you might be wondering why you need to use these at all.

Remember, that these documents are not just contracts they run the gamut from design specs such as wire framing to business contracts that set a date for completion as well as payment terms,as well as a 1 to 2 page proposal outlining how a particular site will function. indeed, web design documents are of paramount importance both to the designer or developer as well as his team and to the client.

But you might still be wondering what why you should go through the extra effort and time to create and use web design documents. Well first off, what design documents are designed to save you time and effort and money. Reason being is that with a set of properly done documents both you and the client and his or her team know exactly what to expect in the coming months.

Not only that, but if you find that the project gets off track either due to missed deadlines missed payments or to what’s known as scope creep, then you have documents that you can refer to that will help you get the project back on track on time and on budget

Another reason to use web design documents is for protection. It is much harder for a client to stall, missed payments, or not to you at all when you have a legal document that he or she has signed and it is also harder for them to say that the site isn’t exactly what they wanted because you will have other documents such as a proposal or wireframe to fall back on in case you need it.

Conversely this will also protect the client in case the web designer does not or has no intention of finishing the project. Now, with that said, you might think that web design documents such as these are difficult to create. However, there are documents that you can use as templates for your business so that you can spend the time not on creating contracts and postals but I’m doing what you do best and that is to develop and design client websites.

Now that you have finished designing your debut website on your computer, you now need to put it on the internet where everyone can access it. The reason for this is because it is of no use designing a website, when it is not meant to be viewed on the internet. The usual way to deliver files to a web server is by File Transfer Protocol (FTP) after you have registered the domain name of your choice with a web hosting company online. I think I need to explain what a web server means. A web server is a computer that it permanently connected to the internet. The major significance of such computer is its continuous connection to the internet. This service is usually provided by web hosting companies. These companies are licensed to register domain names; they also host website files in order to make them visible on the internet.

The process of transferring your website files to the web server via FTP requires a User ID, password and FTP address for your pages, which your web space provider would have given you probably with FTP software also. Most HTML editing packages incorporate FTP software. They also usually synchronize the content to ensure you have the same files live and locally as well as check for broken links and dead files.

Majority of people store their web pages on a devoted web hosting service as I mentioned above. Nevertheless, once your computer is connected to the internet, it can also serve as a Web or FTP server, just by running the right software. You can even run your own server on a regular dial-up account, though of course your pages or files will only be accessible while you are online; and you will have a different IP address each time you log in, so you won’t be able to pass it on until you are online. This is operable enough if you just want to demo a couple of Web pages to a friend. However, if you want a good Web presence, you will need a permanent connection to run your own server.

It can be very easy to install servers; you only need to get yourself familiar with the instructions and you will be good at it in a short time. Very important to set properly are the security options. These are needed to allow only appropriate access to appropriate directories. Making your web pages read-only and your FTP incoming write-only will be your best bet. Anything different from these can get you hacked!

Maybe you have wondered several times about how websites are built. The fact is you are right on your way to build one for yourself. For the fact that you even thought about it, you have started learning. Building a website is easier than you might think. This is because there are many types of software and tools out there that will assist you to learn the easy way. To be very candid, you can even make use of pre-built templates for your sites.

A website consists of hypertext mark-up language documents or “HTML” documents. An HTML document is made up of words, images and commands that all work together to make a website accessible on the internet. Dozens of programs can convert text to HTML in some manner. Most attempt it in a what-you-see-is- what-you-get (WYSIWYG) mode, meaning you don’t have to look at any of the under the cloak code. However well they succeed it is worthwhile devoting sometime to learning the basics. While it is simpler than computer programming in general, it is even more insistent and tedious. So once you understand how it works, even though you will do most of the work in a website editor, you will know enough to be able to go in and tweak the raw code.

Creating a website from start basically boils down to writing the page in plain text, adding “tags” that make it look respectable, and creating links to other pages. As you get into the more advanced levels you will also have to consider whether the browsers that visit your page can construe your code. Regrettably, these codes work differently in browsers; some code will work alright in one browser but not in another. The smartest approach to get familiar with how HTML functions is to create a simple page from start. You will not need any composite software; a simple text editor like notepad or simple text will work. Still, an HTML editor can help by automating much of the process so you do not have to key in all the code manually.

There are more than enough editors to choose from, but your choices are dependent on the type of website you want to create. Small, simple, static sites can be linked together with small simple editors that come free with browsers. These free editors have been tested and found reliable for your mini website needs. The fact here is that you can at anytime make a search for the HTML editor of your choice. If you will be building a website that is dynamic, you must be prepared to spend a token in order to get the appropriate editor. All these I still insist you can search online.
