I’m Ready For My Close Up Darling – Why There Are No Ugly Vampires

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

There is an existing variety in the vampire world. In the movies where the vampires are the ‘enemy’ more often than not they are dark, ugly, mindless. The best example of this can be found in the ‘Buffy and Angel’ shows, where the vampires generally don’t look their best except for the ‘good ones’ like Angel and Spike, until they get pissed off.

The stark contrast to that is the beautiful vampire, the one we desire and lust after quite readily.

These vampires are the ones belonging to Anne Rice; Lestat, Louis, Marius… she’s written them to be sensual and seductive, then there is the Twilight Sage, with young almost humanlike vampires all desperately beautiful.

Why is it that vampires seem forbidden to be ugly?

In the vampire community, it is commonly believed that there should be no ugly vampires in the world. It was phrased by the character Louis de Pointe du Lac as follows; “Do you find us beautiful, magical? Our white skin, our fierce eyes? “Drink” you ask me, do you have any idea of the thing you will become?”

The answer is; yes, they do… and here comes the small list of reasons that explain why vampires can’t be ugly.

First of, as said by a fan of the Twilight saga on a Facebook fangroup named “Because of Edward Cullen, human boys have lost their charm”; “I think every girl deserves an Edward”.

Vampires are always beautiful in the media. Why? Sex sells.

It’s a well known fact and no less true for vampires. There’s a whole range of ‘types’ too, but all have beauty in common even if there are those that would argue this.

What attracts a woman to vampires is the promise of forever; to be loved forever is every girl’s dream and a vampire very well could.

In addition, their beautiful looks add to the myth; the Twilight ‘hero’ is compared constantly to Adonis in the novel, for his appearance. In the Vampire Chronicles, Lestat sires Louis because he finds the man so beautiful he falls in love with him upon first glance.

The secret to this extreme beauty is held within the fan target reader the authors hope to reach; anyone would prefer dreaming away about the most beautiful vampire out there, who’ll love her forever and turn them immortal so that they too can be young and beautiful forever.

Let’s face it; the man with the beer gut, or the woman with the saggy breasts… they don’t speak or appeal to the mind.

Everyone’s drawn to the things that are bad, and vampires bring the term ‘bad’ to a whole new level. They’re seductive and mysterious, unreachable creatures that one just hopes they can entice with their human soul, lure them in and make them fall in love.

This image of the perfect, seductive and lethal vampire is not complete with a person that can’t bother with personal hygiene or looking good.

And there lies the answer to why the media, whether you opt for books or movies, has no ugly vampires; they must speak to the imagination and leave one dreaming of them upon finish.

Are there none out there then?

In the vampire community that exists, there’s several who aren’t necessarily the most beautiful creature ever to roam the earth, that are average and normal, but even they are inspired and transfixed upon those greatest of vampires that we love throughout the history of vampire lore. Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Buffy’s Angel, Anne Rice’s vampires, Edward Cullen… all of them hold an infinite beauty that appeals.

The perfect creatures, the ultimate temptations.

Avatar – A Must Watch

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Avatar is about how excessive desire drives people to err. They go a long way to achieve what they want. Pity, Mercy and Regret is forgotten all along while nature is patient, forgiving until a moment where It has no other option.

The hero (Sully) is a human who goes into the body of an artificially created Navi, the tribal people. The story is about how Sully saves the tribe from the hands of the humans, who are ready to destroy anything that would prevent them from getting what they want. Here, the humans are referred to as aliens and the Navis are referred to as the HUMANS – the referral being done based on the attitude of the respective race.

The sequence of events is perfect and there is not a moment you would be able to turn your eyes away from the screen. The creatures, the portrayal of the Navis – their lifestyle being so close to nature is wonderful. So absorbing and so much real is the film that in the end you would wish that you were one among the Navis.

Like history has told us the downfall of great leaders because of their excessive ambition in expansion, so does this humdinger from James Cameroon and the way it has told us is exemplary and deserves a charm. Well, I see this message from the film:

Nature’s gifts know no bounds,
And so is man’s desire,
Let us take measures,
To preserve the Treasure.
Shall we?

Liven Your Office Life With Buffy the Vampire Slayer Action Figures

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

I know that office work can be dry and sometimes it is hard to meet people or have conversations with them. My solution when I started at my new job last year was to bring in a few action figures. Yes, on the one hand that branded me as a little bit of a geek. OK, as a big old geek, but that was alright. I wanted my coworkers to get to know me and, more importantly to remember me.

I work in a big place. There are hundreds of people in the department where I work. It feels like a typical cube farm. Actually the work and the people I work with are interesting, but it is easy, in that sort of setting, to be anonymous. That is what I wanted to avoid.

I’m a big fan of the Buffy the Vampire television series. I loved it when it was on originally and I catch a rerun every once in awhile. The action figures started out as a way to prolong my interactions with the characters. OK, that sounds weird. What I mean is this: the characters are so rich, the story arcs for each of them are deep and fulsome that they touched me and sparked my imagination in a way a television series never had before. The action figures were not very expensive — there are expensive ones, collector’s items – so I could justify it in my budget. I picked up the action figure of Buffy and Angel at the prom. One of Faith (I have a soft spot for “bad” girls, I guess), one of Spike…. and the collection grew.

So when I started at this new job, I was thinking of ways to meet people, conversation starters, and I thought of the action figures. They were mostly in a box from when I moved two years ago. So I rummaged through the box and pulled out “Prophecy Girl”. If you ever watched the show, it’s the first season finale. Buffy is supposed to go to a dance (hence the white dress) and she ends up meeting the “Master” the head vampire. I won’t spoil the ending, but as usual Buffy kicks butt. That figurine in particular looks great. It looks very much like Sarah Michelle Gellar, so I brought that one in to work.

With the white dress and pearls, you might think it was a regular doll, but the crossbow is a dead giveaway. So I propped Buffy on my monitor (yes, we have old clunky monitors) and waited to see what would happen. A few people recognized the doll, which made my day. For my cube mates, at least we had a connection — we could talk about TV and it was more than simply “What’d ya do last night?” “I watched TV.”

So I am glad that I took the plunge and brought in a couple of Buffy the Vampire Slayer action figures. It made meeting people a little easier at the new job. Maybe it will work for you, too!

A Brief History of Channel 4

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Post-Newsweek Stations is the owner of WDIV-TV, or virtual channel 4, a television station affiliated with NBC. WDIV-TV is the group’s flagship station and is based in Detroit, Michigan. Hence, the news broadcast is known as channel 4 Detroit news. It’s also the home base of the group, which sees the offices of Post-Newsweek Stations located beside WDIC-TV’s studios. Together with its flagship status, all the stations in the group were brought under the ‘Local’ brand umbrella.

Prior to 1978, the channel 4 Detroit news station was known as WWJ-TV. The new name came about after the Evening News Association swapped stations with the Washington Post to get around regulations the FCC was considering at the time. Though it ultimately wasn’t approved, the new policy would have limited ownership of newspaper and television media in the same market. WWJ-TV was renamed WDIV-TV, for which the ‘D’ stood for ‘Detroit’ and the ‘IV’ signified the number ‘4′ as written in roman numerals

WDIV is noted for a number of firsts in its history of broadcasting. When it signed to WWDT in 1946, it became the first television station in Michigan. It broadcast regularly a year after demonstration programming that ran for a day in 1946. WDIV, also said to mean ‘Where Detroit Is Vital’, also bagged the first telecast of Red Wings, Detroit Tigers and Lions games. It was also the first Michigan television station to broadcast in color in 1954.

WDIV ended its analog television broadcast in the first half of 2009, converting fully to digital transmission. This marked the end of 62 years of broadcasting on channel 4. Although its digital broadcasts are transmitted on the pre-transition channel number 45, its virtual channel still reads ‘4′ thanks to the program and system information protocol (PSIP) used to transmit it to digital television receivers.
