Darnell Self was like most of us. He was getting by in life the hard way with little or nothing to look forward to, wondering if there is more to life. He worked as a Manager in a clothing store at a strip mall that consumed most of his time everyday. Again, like most of us, needing to take time off was nearly impossible, more so since he was the Manager. Life was just a struggle.

He did however have the entrepreneurial spirit within him and tried several ventures that made promises of a better life. None worked out, and even after finishing college with a PR degree, no new promising jobs came his way that seemed to fit the bill, so there he stayed. Until Pre-Paid Legal came along. In Pre-Paid Legal, his ability to work hard at something and stay the course served him well. Together with proper leadership he soon became the person he knew he should be. His charismatic nature soon came out and with the right opportunity, success was finally his.

Darnell’s accolades soon became numerous, he started to get ahead in life and today he is the leader of one of the largest organizations within Pre-Paid Legal. He is on the corporate marketing team within Pre-Paid Legal and commands respects and admiration wherever he goes. I was at a convention and before it started when he and others walked in he got a standing ovation. He hadn’t even said a word yet, but the crowd knew who he was and his reputation preceded him.

His ability to train others to be successful in Pre-Paid Legal is in part what makes him quite the amazement. Darnell’s public speaking puts his audience at ease, often making it funny and entertaining while getting across all the important information. Anyone seeing him in person walks away with value.

Darnell’s success and ventures are not limited to Pre-Paid Legal. His success there has afforded him the opportunities to help and give back in other areas. One organization he founded provides food, supplies and money to entire villages! There are countless people who have learned from him and either matched their incomes or surpassed them to be able to walk away from their jobs to enjoy life as he now does.

It’s an intriguing thing to realize where he was in life and what he has now accomplished. He is quick to mention that without personal development and the proper mentoring he might not be where he is today. These ideas are key. It has been my observation of other successful leaders that those two components seem to persist. Personal development and proper mentoring. One simply cannot go it alone and hope to accomplish all that they wish without someone else leading the way, and you yourself growing into a role you hadn’t even conceived.

Darnell’s charisma is also something to think about. Did he always have that? Did he grow into that and obtain confidence with his growing success? In part, I would have to say yes, it did grow with him, as his personal development did. I can say this after viewing earlier videos of his presentations and demeanor compared to what it is today. One can also argue he was just that type of person, and he was still charismatic before, just maybe to a lesser degree. I think I’ll just sum it up by saying over the years he has become quite polished. So, in a nutshell, the celebrity-like Darnell is just a man. A man who made a decision to have more. He got the mentoring help and a vehicle to accomplish his goals with and the rest is history. If he can, why not you?
